Craniopathy

Did you know that 80% of your nervous system is in your head? When we analyze and address the skull using Craniopathy, we can make some of the most powerful changes to our body.

Craniopathy, or Chiropractic Cranial Work, is a technique that analyzes and restores function to the skull, dural-meningeal system, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) mechanics, and central nervous system. CSF is the fluid that nourishes and protects your brain and spinal cord. CSF moves up and down your body with the motion of the sacrum and regulation by the occiput, which is why it is a core technique of SOT. The dural-meningeal system connects to the inside of the skull, nerves, and bones of the spine too. Therefore, any subluxations or misalignments in the skull, spine, and pelvis impacts your entire nervous system negatively. Many people confuse Craniosacral Therapy (CST) and Craniopathy. While they both influence CSF flow, Craniopathy specifically addresses alignment and structural function of the 22 bones of the skull. This allows us to address the entire central nervous system influencing the nerves that come out of your skull and spine.

Craniopathy is beneficial for all ages, especially in our little ones where cranial bones are freely moveable, since it changes more than just the alignment of the bones. Adult cranial bones still have approximately 1/4 mm of motion, therefore care continues to have a strong influence on the nervous system. Here is a list of the some common conditions that can improve with Craniopathy:

Infants:

  • Torticollis or preference to one side

  • Reflux

  • Nursing and latching trouble

  • Tongue Ties (both before and after a release/revision)

  • Head shape or facial asymmetries

  • Plagiocephaly/Flat Head Syndrome

Children and Adults:

  • Ear Infections

  • TMJ discomfort

  • Sinus and congestion

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Behavioral challenges

  • Concussions

  • Stress and Anxiety

  • Vertigo

  • Dizziness

During a cranial evaluation, Dr. Shivani will gently assess the skull’s bones, sutures, any asymmetries, along with facial features including the jaw and palate. For babies, she will also take cranial measurements to assess the head shape. Cranial corrections are made with gentle pressure on these structures (the younger the child, the lighter the pressure used). After this care, adults and older children often feel relaxed and symptoms ease, and babies may also release tension in their heads, body, and even with nursing.
